What ‘verified’ actually means here.

What “verified” actually means here.

Anyone can call their venue sensory-friendly. We only list places where we’ve confirmed what’s actually on offer — before a family shows up hoping for something that isn’t there.

Here’s exactly what we check.

What we look for

We verify places against a specific set of sensory accommodations. A listing can only appear on CalmerPlaces if at least one of the following is confirmed:

  • Sensory hours — specific days and times when the venue runs reduced-stimulation programming (lowered lights, reduced volume, lower capacity). We record the exact schedule, not just “available sometimes.”
  • Quiet room or calming space — a dedicated area where someone who needs a break can decompress. We note whether it requires staff to access or is freely available.
  • Sensory kits — headphones, fidgets, weighted items, or similar tools available to visitors on request or at the door.
  • Trained staff — documented autism awareness or sensory training, including IBCCES Certified Autism Center designation where it exists.
  • Dimmed lighting / low noise — venues that maintain consistently reduced stimulation as a standard operating condition, not just occasionally.
  • Visual schedules — structured visual aids available for visitors who benefit from predictability.
  • Wheelchair accessibility — full physical accessibility confirmed.

What we don’t accept

We don’t list a place just because it says “we welcome everyone” or “we’re autism-friendly.” Vague claims without specific accommodations are not enough. We also don’t list places based solely on their marketing materials — we cross-reference with official program pages, certification databases (like IBCCES), and direct venue information.

IBCCES Certified Autism Center

Some venues in our directory hold IBCCES Certified Autism Center (CAC) designation. This means at least 80% of their guest-facing staff have completed autism awareness certification through the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards. Where this certification exists, we flag it prominently. It’s the highest independently-verified standard currently available for public venues.

When things change

Venues change their programs. Hours shift. Staff turn over. We update listings when we become aware of changes, and we encourage venue owners to claim their listing and keep their own details current. If you visit a place and find the information is out of date, please let us know — accurate data is the whole point.
