The Portland Japanese Garden is a traditional Japanese garden designed to foster peace, quiet, and contemplation. Located in the hills of Washington Park, the garden’s tranquil pathways, flowing streams, and rustic stone bridges offer a grounding, low-sensory environment that encourages relaxation.
To accommodate guests with mobility challenges, a complimentary shuttle bus runs regularly between the lower entry gate and the upper garden pavilion. The garden features several distinct areas, including a flat stroll garden, a dry landscape garden, and a tea garden, each offering varying levels of sensory elements.
Due to the traditional design of the garden, some pathways feature gravel, stepping stones, and natural incline slopes that may be uneven. Visitors are requested to speak in quiet, hushed tones throughout the property to preserve the peaceful auditory environment. Wheelchair accessible routes are mapped and available at the gate.
